Right Doug, right con, right awesome…

So, my awesome wife and I went to AwesomeCon in DC. I bought autographs for Alan & Nathan. I also got a photo session with the two of them and a selfie with Nathan. This was our first real con so we had no idea what to expect.

One thing I did to get ready for the con was buy a neon green shirt that said this on both sides… (see previous post about the Name Dropping Podcast)

I went to DC from a tradeshow I was working in FL and my wife headed to DC from Madison where we live. I got there early to pick up our badges, she got to DC about 2am (stupid windy weather) We got in live for the Once We Were Spacemen podcast around 7am. There were about 8 or 9 of us waiting.  The doors opened up and we went into the hall for the podcast recording. It was a blast. Nathan has a fantastic bit he does with watches….

Podcast ends, we head down to get in line for the autographs…. Time passes and we have to get out of line to go to our photo op with Nathan & Alan.

I had been telling the story about me buying the websites and the amazingness that followed. The people behind us in the photo line were excited to see what happened. Me, being me, had emailed the people I had been in contact with about the website that were were coming to the con. Suddenly (not really) we were next for the photo op. I rush in and say to Nathan, “I’m the Doug, I’m the website guy!” he stands up, shakes my hand and says “Alan, this is the guy!” Alan shakes my hand. We take the picture and start to walk away and Nathan goes “Wait, Doug, we have something for you!” His assistant Kim hands me a signed Mal Reynolds Funko. Mind blown….

Photo op done, mind gooey, we head back to the autograph lines. We get into Nathan’s line. Many hours and great conversations and much foot and back pain later…. We are next. I hand over my Jack Moore autographed photo from the Con Man series Kickstarter for the autograph. We get to the front and I told Nathan that the Con Man head shot was supposed to be autographed by Jack Moore, the captain from the failed scifi series Spectrum,  but he signed it Nathan, so could he please sign it as Jack Moore? There was a long pause, then he signed it Jack. Then I handed him my phone and he took some selfies. The man is a pro.

We quickly run over to Alan’s line at the next booth over. We were the last ones (I lost my ticket and there is a whole story here…) I hand over my Wray Nerely head shot, again, from Con Man. Alan had done the correct thing and signed the Con Man Kickstarter photo as Wray from Spectrum…  He grabs the Con Man photo and starts chuckling and looking around, I see this as my cue to exclaim “I’ll see you in hell!!!” (Wray’s catch phrase from Spectrum). He literally laughed out loud. It was awesome. We chatted briefly, he signed the photo. I told him I had Nathan sign his Jack Moore, which made him happy. He also told me they had meant to give me a shout out on the podcast for the website stuff. I told him there was time….

I don’t know how people do these lines time and time again. We spent about 10 or so hours standing in line. Too much, but well worth it.

The next day as we were on our way back to Madison, we heard the new about the relaunch of Firefly as an animated series. I suspected that’s what it would be since they can all record voice overs from anywhere.

Me, being me, immediately bought the following websites…

  • fireflyanimated.com
  • fireflyanimatedseries.com
  • animatedfireflyseries.com
  • animatedfirefly.com
  • fireflytheanimatedseries.com

All of which will be turned over at no cost.

Life is so shiny!!!
